What is paint?

Paint = Pigment* + Binder + Solvent
Egg Tempera = Pigment* + Egg Yolk + Water
Watercolor = Pigment* + Gum Arabic + Water
Gouache = Pigment *[lots more than for Watercolor] + Gum Arabic + Water
Oil Paint = Pigment* + Linseed, Walnut or Poppy Oil + Turpentine
Water Miscible Oils Pigment* Linseed Oil + Miscibility Agent** + Water
Acrylics = Pigment* Acrylic Co-polymer + Water

*All pigments must be checked in Monona Rossol's The Artist's Complete Health and Safety Guide for possible toxicity. 

**Miscibility Agent is something which makes oil and water mix, like lecithin or egg yolk

There are many more kinds of paint.  You can find formulas for them in Robert Massey's Formulas for Painters.  However, you must check in Monona Rossol's The Artist's Complete Health and Safety Guide to see whether it is non-toxic or must be used with safety equipment.
